JOE (Andy Lau) had a happy family until the death of his mother. He can't accept his stepmother, and his rebellious nature takes hold resulting in a hostile relationship with his father. One way for JOE to find his identity is motorbike racing. At a bar where most racers hang around, JOE, recognized as the "King of the Road", meets DAVID. Their friendship grows until DAVID joins the racing team sponsored by the motorbike shop of JOE's father.
JOE's girlfriend ANNIE, despite being totally taken for granted, stands by him. She takes care of JOE during his unconsciousness after a severe crash. No sooner has JOE recovered than he decides to race again - for his best friend JIMMY, who died in a match against DAVID and his rivals who ridicule JOE, and for his self-esteem. ANNIE dissuades him from racing or she will leave. Now JOE is torn between friendship, love, and dignity.
With the digital Dolby soundtrack, one can almost feel the vibrating engine while watching the movie. A masculine movie with touching emotions. This tearjerker was elected as one of "The 10 Best Movie of the Year" in Hong Kong and won Derek Yee Best Director Award from the Hong Kong Film Critic Society.
